2017
This dissertation deals with the iconography of the Zodiac between Antiquity and Middle Age, in particular in churches between the XIth and the XIIIth century. The heart of the dissertation is the analysis of a corpus of 260 items. These items concern the figuration of the signs of the Zodiac and the Labors of the months, whether or not combinated, within ecclesial ornamentation between the XIth and the XIIIth century. This period corresponds to the “renaissance” and to the growth of the figuration of the Zodiac in this context. The study is divided into three parts. The first section deals with historiography and with the presentation of the corpus. Then, the origins, re-appropriations and…

To discuss about the importance of the Arab and Islamic heritage kept in Jerusalem (Palestine) means to highlight its relevance as a part of a specific Palestinian legacy, as well as an insuppressible part of the Palestinian culture as a whole. It mainly consists of manuscripts (letters, edicts and documents of various kinds) and ancient volumes stored in some historical archives and libraries, but it also consists of the very places where this documentation has been preserved. Through the history of such places (archives and libraries), in effect, it is also possible to reconstruct the history of important Palestinian families (ulema) which - accordingly to a specific Islamic conception - …

Familiarity and otherness in late-Ottoman travel accounts in Palestine.
2018
Apart from the more common pilgrimage reports, or rihla higaziyya, the rihla maqdisiyya (journey to the Palestinian territories) definitely forms a distinct typology of account, both from a historical and a literary point of view. The territories of Palestine, which are traditionally considered as a part of the wider unit of Bilad al-Sham in the perspective of Arab historians and geographers, represent a peculiar pole of attraction for Arab travellers throughout the centuries, due to the significant presence of holy places and the special regard accorded to the city of Jerusalem as early as the Islamic conquest of the area. In the late-Ottoman period (mid-19th - 20th century), Palestine exp…

Cyril of Jerusalem, the author of the Catechesis delivered to the catechumens and the newly baptized, gave the teachings of Jesus Christ on the basis of the Symbol in force in Jerusalem, and above all on the basis of the Holy Scriptures. He readily referred to the books of the Old and New Testaments, quoting literal citations or paraphrasing individual biblical ideas. Among the frequently quoted biblical books is also the St. Paul’s Epistle to the Romans, which was used by Cyril almost 40 times. Some of Paul’s statements were used as an element of the content link, while others are the starting point for presenting the wider context of Christian teachings to the audience. In most cases, the…
